The Reaping
Mind Blowing Blast.

There is something critically wrong with the world when a movie like The Reaping comes out with so many negative reactions from critics. Before going out to see it myself, I almost stayed home because of negative reviews posted on rottentomatoes.com. I would have missed out on one hell of a ride.
The Reaping explores the realm of miracles through the eyes of Katherine Winter (Hillary Swank) an ordained minister who lost her faith through finding scientific explanations for what were called miraculous occurrences. Katherine starts off the movie in a South American country where a group of local people are dying because of what appears to be a miracle. The movie cuts to a presentation she is giving at the university explaining what was causing the problems for the people.
After her presentation, a man named Doug (David Morrissey) approaches her in her office and begs her to go help out his town. Katherine travels down to Doug’s remote town with her ex teacher’s assistant Ben who has yet to lose his faith despite working with her for an extended period already. With help from the folks in town, Katherine and Doug investigate a series of plagues troubling them and uncover the mystery behind it all.
Hillary Swank and David Morrissey both play their roles quite well, adding a bit of depth to them. The movie has quite a few well placed jump scares that will have anyone jumping. The directors also successfully create a sense of dread that will start early and stay with you till the end. I found myself completely gripped and breathless during the latter portion of the movie. The special effects are phenomenal and the plagues are perfectly executed as I would have imagined them. If you have a soft spot for religious themed thrillers, you will have a total mind blowing blast at The Reaping. .
Final Score: 4.5/5
