The Number 23
“The Number 23” succeeds as a dark psychological thriller
Review by Sirus
“The Number 23” is certainly a strange movie. In the movie, a man starts reading a book and soon begins to draw conclusions that the book is about his life. The events he reads about start to seem familiar to him as he looks back into his past. As he is reading the book, he also begins to develop an unhealthy obsession with the number 23 and its connection to events in his life and to horrible events in history. As he sits in various areas reading the book, we hear the text of the moderately short book in the background and we are shown the story through his point of view. Jim Carrey plays the man reading the book and the man who is the subject of the book he is reading. The book scenes are dark and totally visually appealing. The movie has an interesting twist at the end that wraps up the story nicely.
Jim Carrey does an awesome job in both of his roles. I personally loved his look in the darker storybook role. The movie is extremely dark and has images of all sorts of dark, sinful things. Throughout the story we see multiple disturbing murder and suicide scenes that are beautifully bloody. There are also quite a few kinky sex scenes that don’t show much skin besides the occasional boob. Fans of dark horror who enjoy a good mystery will enjoy “The Number 23” even if just for the numerology. Others who consider what I described above to be trashy will not enjoy the movie and should stay far away. The movie is perfectly complemented by a well written soundtrack done by Harry Gregson-Williams. I can’t wait to get my hands on the score for a good long listen. “The Number 23” succeeds as a dark psychological thriller and was well worth the money.
Final Score: 4/5
