Mortal Kombat: Deception is the latest installment in the Mortal Kombat series. To tell you the truth, I was not impressed with it. It was not as great as the other games. But even though it was not that good, it did have a few new things to it.
In Mortal Kombat: Deception, there is now a story mode. In this story mode, you are a young boy named Shujinko. Shujinko dreams of being a great warrior and one day being able to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament. At the beginning of the game, you train with Bo' Rai' Cho to get a hang of the controls. Once you finish your training, an avatar visits you and tells you that the elder gods have chosen you as their champion. There is an evil that has returned and in order to destroy that evil, you must recover 6 ancient artifacts. You accept the elder gods quest and from there, you go on to travel through each of the realms of the Mortal Kombat universe. Along the way, you meet several characters from the previous Mortal Kombat games. Also, as you progress through the game, you age. So you start the game as a young boy and end it as an old man.
One of the great things about story mode is that after you accept your quest, you gain the ability to absorb or copy any fighters' training style. But in order to do that, you must first find the person that you want to train with. Once you train with a person, you can then fight as them in any future fights. The only thing that is bad about this is that you can not choose who you fight as. The game randomly picks someone that you have trained with and has Shujinko transform into them.
There are also two other new additions to the game.
One of them is a game mode called chess kombat. In this game, as you can tell from the title, you play a chess-like game. Before you start the game though, you choose what characters make up your team, or, so to speak, chess pieces. The thing that I liked about this mode is that instead of just taking a piece, you actually fight to see which piece wins. The only thing that I did not like about this part of the game is that the pieces do not move like those in a normal chess game.
The other addition to this game is puzzle kombat. In puzzle kombat, you play a game that is similar to tetris. At the bottom of the screen, you will see your character fighting with another character. The only way you can win is by scoring enough points to where your character pushes your opponent back far enough to where there is a 1 ton weight that drops on him when he is under it. I don't really like this game because I never really liked tetris.
And of course, you have kombat mode where you fight different characters until you get to the boss.
But the graphics. Now I can't say anything bad about the graphics. The graphics for Mortal Kombat: Deception are superb. They are some of the best graphics that I have seen for modern day consoles so far. The characters just look so real. The blood is great and the enviroments are well animated.
There's not much to say about the sound because there are not that many sound effects. Just your usual kicking and punching and grunting sounds that have always been with the Mortal Kombat series.
Now concerning gameplay. Mortal Kombat has always been fun and will always be fun. There is a rush that people get from beating other people to death. Mortal Kombat: Deception is very entertaining. They give you alot of different games to play so that you never get bored. After beating the story mode, you might get bored with it and never want to play it again, but there is kombat mode, chess mode, and puzzle mode to keep you busy. I predict that this game will always be a favorite with gamers.
Overall, I think that if you enjoy beating the living shit out of someone and love gaming, then you will definitely enjoy playing Mortal Kombat: Deception.
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 7/10
Gameplay: 6/10
Lasting appeal: 7/10
Overall: 7/10
