What's better than seeing U2 live in concert? Absolutely nothing. But, finally, there is one spectacle that comes close. U2 3D is an amazing concert film that truly makes you feel like you are in the crowd of the actual show, all for the price of a movie ticket.
What's great about U2 3D is that it's stripped down to the basics. Unlike Rattle and Hum, U2's previous concert film, there is no wasted time with interviews and documentaries. The movie starts with a tension building title card sequence that lasts a few minutes. But, U2 3D truly starts the moment you hear Bono yell “Uno, Dos, Tres, Catorce!”. From that moment, all the way to the end credits we are treated to a great live set from one of the world's best band with no interruption.
U2 has one of the best reputations for live shows, so it's completely fitting that they were the band chosen for this film. It's hard to say whether or not the movie would have been as good without the incredible
U2 helming it. Every member of
U2 is extremely talented. Bono's vocals never fail, singing strong words of wisdom and love. The Edge and Adam Clayton are perfect throughout, wailing on their guitar and bass, respectively. Most of the songs in
U2 3D are slower
U2 tunes, which perfectly fits the mood of the concert. My personal favorite song performed in the movie was
Beautiful Day, but that's not to say that each song wasn't equally stellar. The song that seemingly got the strongest reaction from the audience was
Pride (In the Name of Love), fitting seeing as it's one of
U2's finest.
In some films, 3D has been known to hinder the experience. In the case of
U2 3D, the 3D makes the experience. When you're sitting there in the theater, there will be times where you will think you are in the crowd of the audience. There were times where I had to restrain myself from waving my arms in the air or standing up. In fact, if it were socially acceptable, I probably would have. The 3D looks great, too. The band members and instruments come out from the screen and look crystal clear. There were times where it felt that Bono was personally singing to you.
U2 3D is a powerful, wildly fun and entertaining experience. It simulates the feel of being at a concert, but because of the strength of
U2's lyrics and imagery, it also makes you think and feel feelings of love and compassion. If you love
U2 and have been dying to see them in concert, make sure you don't miss this opportunity. And if you say you don't like
U2; go to hell.
