There Will Be Blood
There Will Be Blood is an achievement of a film that will have you going over the events you witness over and over in your mind after you leave the theater.

Review by Sirus

Man has been unable to resist temptation with few exceptions since the beginning of time. The characters in There Will Be Blood are no different. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) is an oil man by trade who has the smarts and talent required to build a successful business drilling for oil in the early 1900s. The movie opens with Daniel putting all his effort into digging for oil in what appears to be his own personal project. After a few bumps along the way, he discovers a rock that signals to him that his hole will produce oil. He brings in the equipment with a couple men to drill down and extract the black gold from beneath his lot. Daniel is not only blessed with a successful lot that day but also a son who is born to him.

Years pass and his son is now a young boy who devotedly follows his father and supports his endeavors. While working in their office one day, Daniel and one of his close business associates are approached by a young man who says he knows of an area of land where there is oil to be drilled. He offers the information about the whereabouts of this land for a price, one that is gladly paid. Daniel travels to this land with his son where he spends a good amount of effort to acquire the land for drilling and clashes with a young, local preacher named Eli (Paul Dano). The audience is privileged enough to be able to watch as Daniel is changed by his success and Eli is changed through the course of his maturing into an adult.

There Will Be Blood is a complex tale that is driven forward most by its wonderful acting. Daniel Day-Lewis gives the performance of a lifetime, one so fantastic that it is worth the price of admission just to see his talents. Young Paul Dano does a fantastic job as well, showing that he has the potential for great things while at the same time giving a performance that will be hard to top. The soundtrack is equally as wonderful with a string-heavy orchestral score that accents each scene and sets the mood wonderfully. There Will Be Blood is a slow-moving drama that oozes humanity and emotion from its many scenes. The film moves along at the perfect pace so the viewers don’t lose interest and fills every minute of the 158 minute run-time with meaningful scenes. Things build up wonderfully to the clash in the finale that makes for a meaningfully imapctful ending. There Will Be Blood is an achievement of a film that will have you going over the events you witness over and over in your mind after you leave the theater.

Second Opinion

There Will be Blood is a dark, moody and even disturbing tale of an man who is corrupted with greed in the form of a viscous liquid state. Once a simple silver prospector, Daniel Plainview discovers oil in a mine that will change his life forever. Daniel Day Lewis gives one of the greatest performances of all time as Daniel. The way he talks and carries himself is so realistic, so interesting and so nearly chilling that you cant help but become invested in the character – which is a good thing, considering There Will be Blood works as an incredible character study. The film is a perfect example of when everything literally goes right. Every single performance of the film is breathtaking. The young actor Paul Dano (who's last role was a mute in Little Miss Sunshine) is incredibly powerful as a weasel of a man who is evil in his own way. There are some actors who have been acting in films for 50 years who haven't had a performance as impressive as Paul Dano's.

The cinematography is some of the best ever seen. It's incredibly realistic and innovative, enough so that it will make you question multiple times how they filmed certain scenes. Jonny Greenwood, better known as the lead Guitarist for Radiohead, rivals the world's top composers with his score for the film that has a big hand in creating the amazing dark, moody feel of the film. There Will be Blood has every aspect of the film working in such harmony, which is rare to see in modern cinema. While the subject matter won't appeal to everyone, There Will be Blood is a film that should be seen by everyone who cares about a rich, deep cinematic experience.
