The Simpsons Movie
Solid comedy that manages to have a heart and make fun of itself.

“The Simpsons Movie” is just what it sounds like, a movie-length Simpsons episode. It may sound unlikely that anyone can create an hour and a half long Simpsons movie that keeps audiences interested until the very end, but that is just what we get from the movie. The show’s cast is presented with yet another verifiably insane situation that they must resolve. In the very intro of the movie, we watch as a concert from Green Day ends with yet another attempt by a band at getting their fans to care about the environment. This time, the band is talking about Springfield Lake specifically and how horribly polluted it is. Through a little activism and some quick thinking, Lisa is able to convince the town to clean up their lake. Everything looks like its going fine until Homer ignores all the signs and dumps something toxic of his own. The EPA finds out about the massive level of toxins in Springfield and sets up a plan to keep everyone contained. The Simpsons family has to figure out how to solve the situation while working through some family issues of their own. The movie has its share of tender moments, something that has been missing from the show for quite some time.
The entire voice cast from the show makes a return for the movie and does a great job in everyone’s favorite roles. Like any good episode of the Simpsons, the movie has a lot of small jokes and pop culture references scattered throughout but never becomes laugh-out-loud funny. Different people will get their own mileage out of each of the jokes, depending on how many they get, but there are enough different types of jokes to please most. It was also quite nice to see that the movie didn’t go the path of South Park and simply push the envelope as far as it could go as far as what is acceptable in an animated movie. “The Simpsons Movie” looks and sounds stunning in a theater environment. After watching the show on TV for so many years, it’s fantastic to see the movie in high definition and wide screen. The soundtrack also got a nice spruce up with Hans Zimmer re-orchestrating the main theme and adding his own touch for each of the scenes. If you are a fan of the Simpsons on TV and have grown tired of the direction it has been going in recent years, you should check out “The Simpsons Movie”. It is a solid comedy that manages to have a heart and make fun of itself.
