In 2003, a Hulk movie was released that many fans were disappointed with and I skipped thanks to negative word of mouth. The Incredible Hulk stands on its own as an alternate beginning to Hulk movies and is completely watchable without having seen the earlier movie. Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) is a scientist who is on the run from the military in Brazil. He works as a day laborer at a small bottling plant until an accident tips the US military off to his location. When he is confronted by soldiers, he turns into The Hulk and smashes through their grip. He makes his way to the US to search for any remaining research on the experiment that made him who he is now. He encounters the US military a few times while in the US along with their own enhanced fighter created to combat him. The story is coherent and engaging enough to keep viewer’s interest until the end but it isn’t very deep or meaningful. The story also contains some romance that I found to be well executed and worth including.
Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, and Tim Roth give fantastic performances in the movie, enough to be one of the main reasons it turned out so good. I loved being able to see a different side of Edward Norton after his other recent movies. Tim Roth was fantastic, showing off a lust for blood and battle that is hard to satiate. The soundtrack is the usual epic sounding stuff that one might expect from a comic-book movie. None of the music is particularly memorable nor does it use any overly catchy themes. It does provide a good support for many of the action sequences. The Incredible Hulk has a large amount of action sequences that are well done and quite engaging. The movie is fairly light on the story although what story there is does a good job of developing the characters without filling our heads with tons of convoluted back story. The movie kept me engaged from beginning to end with a satisfying conclusion.

I've never understood why so many people say the original Hulk was garbage. It has a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes which is better than a lot of other superhero movies. I thought that it had a great story that made up for the lackluster action. So it came to a suprise when I heard that they were rebooting the franchise. Why not reboot Elektra or Fantastic Four? Those movies were far worse than Hulk. But, luckily, the new Hulk is a good movie. The action is much more solid and the story is even nearly as good as the previous outing. I wish that they would have left more story in the film, because it seems as if it is almost missing some scenes. But, the great action and acting from Tim Roth, Liv Tyler and Edward Norton make The Incredible Hulk a success and superior to Ang Lee's vision.
