Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is based on the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical and was adapted to the big screen by Tim Burton. Yes you heard right, it’s a musical and it rocks. Sweeney Todd tells the story of a man who calls himself Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) after a turn of events causes him to be exiled. Before being exiled, Sweeny Todd had himself a beautiful wife and baby daughter. A corrupt judge (Alan Rickman) saw his wife and wanted her for himself. He used that as a pretense to arrest Sweeny for something he didn’t do and have him exiled. Thanks to providence at sea, Sweeney is picked up by a young sailor named Anthony Hope who follows him ashore when they reach London. When Sweeney returns to the street he used to live on, he comes upon a pie shop run by a woman named Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). They hit it off and Mrs. Lovett helps him with his revenge. Sweeney is devastated when he hears that his wife killed herself in his absence and decides he must make the horrid judge pay for his evil deed.
Johnny Depp leads the cast with his fantastic performance and genuinely disturbing character. His facial expressions give off an aura of true deep emotional pain at the losses he has felt. Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter and all of the smaller players do great jobs as well. Every member who sings sounds wonderful with Johnny Depp giving a really great singing performance. Sweeney Todd isn’t the kind of movie you want to go to if you are squeamish though. The movie is about a string of revenge killing and has quite a bit of campy blood and many sick, twisted themes. It is a film for people who like musicals and people who just like to watch psychopaths snap and go on killing sprees. Sweeney Todd has the undeniable charm that comes along with Tim Burton directed movies and should not disappoint his fans. If you enjoy musicals but want a little extra violence and blood added in, Sweeny Todd is a no-brainer. Come for Johnny Depp and stay for the music and charm.
