The Spiderwick Chronicles
This is a great movie for the entire family to see together and hopefully to grow closer in the process.
Review by Sirus

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a fantasy movie based on the novel of the same name. 80 years ago there was a man named Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn) who discovered a world of fairies, trolls, goblins, and other magical creatures. He became so obsessed with discovering the secrets of these otherworldly creatures that he devoted his life to uncovering every possible detail. Being a man of intellect, he decided his work wouldn’t be validated unless he wrote everything down in a book. The problem was that the information in the book was all that was needed for a certain evil magical being to kill every other peaceful creature.

The book was sealed away for 80 years until a family who inherited the house moved in. The family brought with them twin boys, Jared and Simon (Freddie Highmore), one of whom was very inquisitive. After some strange things started happening in the house, Jared found his way up to the attic and discovered Arthur Spiderwick’s laboratory and within also found the book. Upon opening the book, goblins and many other creatures of the magical realm were brought into this world once more and now it is up to the family to protect the book and each other from falling into the creatures’ hands.

Freddie Highmore shows in the film that he is able to portray two vastly different characters because the twins he plays are complete opposites of each other. He is slowly becoming my favorite child actor. The film’s score is wonderfully magical and helps the movie instill feelings of childlike wonder and awe. It is great to finally see a good PG rated fantasy movie that manages to give all the characters realistic human qualities and to give values that are important to understand to the children who are going to see it. The family comes to their new house divided and in conflict with each other and, through the ordeal they go through, come to understand how important the family they have really is to them. This is a great movie for the entire family to see together and hopefully to grow closer in the process.
