Speed Racer
Although the effects are amazing, the movie is much more than special effects.

Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a boy who grew up in a family where racing was everything. His father owned a family business that built and raced cars and his older brother was a star racer. It only made sense then that he became a racer himself when he was of age. Speed was so good that he attracted the attention of some greedy corporations who wanted to sponsor him so that they could enjoy the spoils of his winnings. His parents were steadfast in standing against that and Speed agreed. After failing to qualify for the biggest race of all, Speed is invited to join an underground race so that he can get a chance to compete in the grand prix and fight for justice. The story is interesting through the end, even if it is a bit formulaic and predictable. I simply lost myself in the fantasy world and let myself go along for the ride; and what a ride it is.
Speed Racer isn’t exactly the kind of movie that one might expect to go see for the acting. Still, the cast is amazing and gives the movie life. John Goodman plays the part of Speed’s father and is amazing to watch every moment he is present on screen. From the father who is unable to express his emotions very well to the badass who goes nuts to protect his family, he is truly fun to watch. Speed’s younger brother and his partner who is a monkey are immensely enjoyable as well. They serve as some of the best comic relief in ages. Christina Ricci is also wonderful as Speed’s girlfriend Trixie.
The movie itself is a treat for the senses in all aspects. The majority of the movie is nothing short of visually stunning. Every major scene is filled to the brim with all the colors possible. The races especially are completely flashy and colorful and a total joy to take in. The special effects couldn’t be any better, just as you would expect from the Wachowski brothers. The soundtrack is great as well thanks to a powerful score by Michael Giacchino. Speed Racer is a fast paced multicolored ride that never lets you go from beginning to end and deserves to be seen. It gives validation to everyone who feels themselves completely consumed by passion for their hobby. Although the effects are amazing, the movie is much more than special effects.
