She Wants Revenge/Kenna/theStart live in concert
Dack heads out to see some bands live, and writes about the experience.
Review by Dack

What a good line-up this concert had! theStart, Kenna, and She Wants Revenge, all in the same show. I showed up at the venue at about 6:15, with doors opening in 15 minutes. When I arrived at the venue, The Rialto Theatre, there were only about seven people in front of me in line. This might not sound bad, as the concert started at 7:30, but I've arrived at concerts thirty minutes before doors, with a good 150 people in line. Things didn't get much better when the concert started. I got a perfect position, standing in the middle of the second row. The great position wasn't hard to obtain, though, with sixty people (tops) there for the first band, theStart. It's too bad more people weren't there, because theStart was quite amazing.

theStart

I was at the show for Kenna and She Wants Revenge, so sadly, I didn't know much about the first band, besides what I heard online. Unlike most bands, theStart actually sounded better live than they do recorded. theStart consists of four members; two males, and two females. The bassist and guitarist sound great with no missed notes, and perfect synchronization. Unlike many rock bands, the singer and drummer were both female. The drummer was just stunning. She wasn't a very big woman, but she hit that drum harder and faster than most men I've seen.

The highlight of the band is lead singer, Aimee Echo. She belts out some great vocals, not missing a note the entire set. She also has great stage presence, dancing around, and interacting with the audience. Highlights of their set were the songs Wartime It's Time 2 Go Now and Ciao Baby. The latter is a really great slow paced song that ended their set well. If you don't know about theStart, check them out. They are one of the best live straight-up rock bands I've heard in awhile.

Kenna

Next up was Kenna, one of my favorite artists. Even though I like She Wants Revenge a great deal, Kenna is who I was truly there for. Kenna records his music in a studio, so when he tours, he has unofficial members of the band, many of which tour with him for long periods of time, play instruments on stage. The main attraction is Kenna himself, though.

The crowd was again, weak. Even though about fifty more people showed up, only about a total of seventy were standing up for Kenna. Kenna commented on this saying “Hey, to all you She Wants Revenge fans sitting in the back there, waiting."

His set opened with Daylight, a slow and atmospheric song that was a great start to the show. Strobe lights in combination with Kenna's groovy dancing were used to great effect. Following Daylight was Out Of Control. Out of Control is simply an awesome song. Kenna's voice live sounded just as it does on the album. Kenna briefly talked about his bus catching fire in Arizona; the story ended with someone on tour jokingly blaming it on “Loose Wires”. Kenna then broke right into playing Loose Wires, one of his best songs. Every song Kenna did sounded amazing, but it was disappointing he played a small set, consisting of only six or seven songs.

After Kenna played his set, he invited people to his merchandise booth to purchase CD's he would sign. I decided to go to his merchandise booth to see if I could say “Hi,” or something along those deep lines. When I was standing close to Kenna, he shook my hand, asked my name and if he could sign the Kenna shirt I was wearing. I, of course, said “Yes,” and proceeded to chat with him for a minute. Kenna was very nice, and is truly a great guy.

She Wants Revenge

This was the second time I saw She Wants Revenge live. The first time, they simply played nearly every song on their first album. The lead singer had a open shirt, and a Indiana Jones style hat on. The entire concert they played was under blue light, with a constant layer of fog. It was a really cool concert to behold. This time, you didn't get to see any Justin Warfield nipple. He actually looked so different, sporting a vest and beanie, that I didn't even recognize him at first. Even though things may have not looked like their last tour, the stage did look awesome (and more expensive). It was a great presentation.

Even for She Wants Revenge, concert turnout was low. No more than 200 total people were there. Pretty bad for a venue that can hold over 1,500 (I believe). One thing I do want to address were the people at the concert. Although they all seemed like pretty decent people, they were terrible concert-goers. First off, there was no respect given to either opening act, both of which were incredibly good. I've never been to a concert where people didn't get up in the crowd to hear the band. Hell, even when I first saw She Wants Revenge, a local band called The Year Of Acceleration opened the show, and people were cheering and dancing to them.

During the She Wants Revenge show, the majority of people were literally standing still. I've never seen anything like it. I was moving around a little bit to the music, constantly bobbing my head and mouthing the lyrics, but many were just looking at the band. Even the lead singer made the comment that he only saw three or so people singing along. She Wants Revenge isn't really a band that you jump around to, but it's a band that you move around to, at the very least.

With such a lame crowd, I don't know if it's that She Wants Revenge fans are generally assholes, which I doubt because last show people were really into it, or if it's the fact that with such a low turnout, the majority of people wandered off the street and bought tickets, without knowing about any of the bands. I do know that my local rock radio station, KFMA, gave out free tickets to it, which could have resulted in many people who really don't care about the bands at the concert. Although it was bad for the bands and venue, I liked that it was a small crowd, but like the bands and venue, I wish the majority of the crowd actually knew about the bands they were seeing, and weren't, in lack of a better word, dicks.

Moving along to the show. This time they've changed their look a little bit, and while I preferred the first concert I went to, they were once again spot-on with their performance. Things kicked off with First Love, the intro to their sophomore album, This is Forever. The song is instrumental, and not only is an awesome intro to the album, but to the concert as well. Every time the bass kicked in, a giant cloth rose would light up red behind them, which gave a really cool effect to the song. Oddly, the flower/backdrop was never used again.

She Wants Revenge decided to play a fair mix of old and new songs, which I was really happy about, because as much as I like This Is Forever, I prefer their debut album more. Next up was These Things, which sounded just like it did on their album. Written in Blood, one of the best songs from This Is Forever, sounded surprisingly great considering how new it is. Thankfully, She Wants Revenge played my favorite new song, What I Want. What I Want sounds awesome. It's a great mix between She Wants Revenge's darker and lighter stuff, and like the entire set, it sounded great.

The first time I saw She Wants Revenge they played their most popular song Tear You Apart at the end, and repeated the chorus “I want to fucking tear you apart”, so that the crowd could yell it, which, not passing up the chance to scream expletives and She Wants Revenge lyrics simultaneously, we all did. This time, it was just treated like a normal song. Disconnect, a beautiful piano solo was played. Only the keyboardist stays on stage for this song, and when he is finished, the rest of the band reemerges from backstage. The audience was very rude and disrespectful during this. Everyone started having random conversations, or messing around. Some people even left. This is a very beautiful song that the keyboardist really loves, and I could tell that it got to him that people were so uncaring about it. I hate to compare to the last concert, but when I first heard him preform Disconnect, it was probably the song the crowd cheered most to.

She Wants Revenge made history at this show. It was the first time they played their song She Will Always Be a Broken Girl, live. The song sounded like they have been playing it for years.

The concert came to a close with Out Of Control, to which the crowd was encouraged to sing and dance to as much as possible. Of course, few did, but it was great for those that participated.

She Wants Revenge never disappoints live.

Summary

Forgetting the terrible audience, this was really a great show. All three bands were extremely strong, and it was really just a great time. If any one of these bands comes to your town anytime soon, I urge you to go check them out.
