The Saw series of movies has become a cult favorite by some while at the same time receiving criticisms from others for being nothing more than “torture porn”. I will admit that I do enjoy being disturbed by watching the gruesome acts of torture portrayed in the movies. I also find the methods employed by Jigsaw fascinating and the general story more interesting than your average horror fare. The premise of Jigsaw’s MO is simple. He picks people who have taken the wrong path in life and puts them in machines of torture. They are faced with two options. They can save themselves or die from lack of activity. While saving yourself might sound like the obvious choice, many times to save themselves they have to do things to themselves or others that are quite gruesome.
Saw IV’s main focus is Jigsaw’s attempts to show a certain detective the light. Detective Rigg has become obsessed with the idea that he can save everyone he comes across. This obsession leads him to push away his wife and damages their relationship. Jigsaw wants to teach him that he can’t always save everyone and that he needs to learn to let go. This idea of the obsessed cop who ruins his relationship over one case he can’t seem to let go of has been repeated over and over in multiple crime dramas. The difference here is that we finally have someone attempting to get one of them to learn the troubles of their ways, no matter how questionable the methods.
We already knew the ideas behind Jigsaw’s mode of killing from the previous Saw movies but in Saw IV, we are finally shown the trigger that started it all. Through interrogations of his ex-wife, we are able to understand what happened to create in Jigsaw an obsession similar to the one he is trying to help Rigg get over. With the past of Jigsaw revealed, though, it’s hard to imagine what possible story could be left to fill out another movie.
Saw IV could have been nothing but gore the entire way through, and it would have suffered for that. Instead, the good mixture of interesting police work and more twisted tests with moral lessons behind them keep the audience interested and at times on the edge of their seat. The movie manages to present five inventive new death machines that are sure to make viewers cringe in one way or another. Those coming to the movies to get disturbed will certainly be disturbed. Saw IV may not be as good as the third movie but it’s miles better than the second. Fans of the series who enjoyed Saw III who want a little gore for Halloween should definitely check it out.
