Rooster (Al Pacino) and Turk (Robert De Nero) are cops who have been on the force for 120 years between the two of them. In that time they have put away numerous criminals. For every criminal they put away, there are numerous obviously guilty perpetrators who slip through the cracks. Every time one of these slippery types gets off, Turk and Rooster start to question the validity of the system. Is following the rules really getting them where they want to go? Is justice really being served? One day, one of them decides to do something about one of those slime bags outside the law. His actions get the man put away for a crime he didn’t commit to punish him for the crime they know in their heart he did. The characters played by Al Pacino and Robert De Nero are complex and deeply human. For every situation there are numerous reasons behind why they react how they do. Turk’s girlfriend Carla (Karen Corelli), a medical examiner, catches onto their little game and does what she can to try and stop them. Everything is resolved in a satisfying conclusion.
With a movie like this, it is clear that most of the audience is going to see it for the big actors. For a fan of great movies, there is no greater privilege than seeing Al Pacino and Robert De Nero working together. They both have been acting for many years but they haven’t lost their stuff. Al Pacino has a lot of character still. The script gives him a chance to show off a lighter side of his character, even if much of his humor is a little dark. The script in the movie is fantastic. I found myself laughing frequently because so many of the jokes these cops use against their fellow officers are extremely witty. The movie works as a cop thriller because it is thought provoking and never boring. Every moment gives another clue, working steadily towards the finale. When everything comes together, there is a twist that I never saw coming. If you are a fan of cop movies and like to see the greats in action, you should check out Righteous Kill.
