“The Pursuit of Happyness” is a movie about a man named Chris Gardner (Will Smith) who is struggling to make it through life. He invested in what he thought would be a successful business in bone density scanners. The problem with these scanners is that the majority of the hospitals consider them a luxury and don’t want to spend the money to buy them. While Chris is struggling to sell his bone density scanners, his wife is working double shifts to keep food on the table. After putting up with so much, his wife decides to leave and hopefully live elsewhere. Chris is left to provide for his son Christopher with his remaining scanners but they just aren’t enough. Chris decides to apply to an internship at a stock brokerage firm so he can get a well paying job and provide for his kid.
“The Pursuit of Happyness” is advertised as a sad movie but it ultimately doesn’t deliver. The movie feels more like an inspirational made for TV movie and is about as interesting. The movie isn’t gripping by any means although it isn’t really boring either. I left the theater hoping for something more and most of all wishing it was sad enough that I would have wound up crying real hard. Especially around Christmas when so many of this type of movie are shown on TV it’s hard to recommend people go out and pay money to watch this one in the theaters.
Final Score: 2/5 stars
