Pulse is based on a Japanese movie that came out in 2001 called Kairo. Pulse follows a similar theme to Kairo although a bit more modern, which is to be expected because five years have past since Kairo first came out in Japan. Pulse tells the story of four college students who hang out together and go to bars. Mattie’s boyfriend stops answering her phone calls so she gets the feeling that something is wrong. She goes over to his house only to discover his computer showing some super strange things on the computer screen.
When she finally gives up and is ready to turn around and leave out pops her boyfriend and after grabbing a wire from his computer, he goes off in one of the other rooms where he hangs himself. The rest of the movie spends a good amount of the time dealing with the terrors that were let loose from some virus the hackers let out that is devouring people’s souls and the terror/sadness the characters go through before they eventually die.
As a horror movie, Pulse succeeds by giving a good number of jump scares and a lot of images that are just scary to look at. Its kind of hard to really believe some of the story parts which follow a matrix-esque distrust for technology. The movie doesn’t really have much gore or even TV level sex scenes in it. Pulse is worth watching if you enjoy horror movies for all they do. It does a good job of creating dread and foreboding while giving the story to you more directly then the hints you get from the original Japanese version. If you are in the mood for a almost solid yet fun mediocre horror flick, pulse does the trick.
Final Rating: 3.5/5 Stars
