Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Pirates is Plagued with an excessive amount of plot holes, and is nearly incoherent.
Review by Dack

Pirates of The Caribbean At World’s End is the third and final movie in the best movie series ever created based on a ride at Disney Land – which really isn’t saying much.

The first Pirates movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, was released in 2003 to lukewarm reviews but was the smash hit of the year, soon breaking multiple records. After the box office success of Black Pearl, a sequel was sure to follow, and three years later Dead Man’s Chest was released. Dead Man’s Chest was mediocre at best (Receiving a 3.5/5 on Marvel-Ous) and was criticized for not having a conclusive ending. Although the first two Pirates movies had problems, not all was lost for the Pirates trilogy. In my eyes, if At World’s End was a great movie, then the trilogy would be end up being good, with the first movie being alright, and the second being a bridge to the great finale. Sadly, this was not the case, as At World’s End is the worst Pirates movie thus far, and a bad movie on its own.

At World’s End is a mess of a movie. The movie begins with an interesting scene of a group of pirates being hung, with a kid being last to suffer his demise (strange in a Disney movie). Next we see Elizabeth Swan and crew heading to talk to the pirate king in Singapore. After the fight scene in the bath house in Singapore, the movie falls apart. Instead of answering questions from the second movie, we are confronted with an excess amount of new ones. Most scenes are incoherent talking about a situation or myth, then hoping to a new scene talking about a new situation or myth. Most of these situations and myths aren’t ever concluded, or turn into gigantic plot holes. I was confused and bored with this movie 90% of the time, which is bad considering this movie is geared mostly towards children. A strange thing about the movie is that no one on the ship cares about each other. For Instance, every time a crew member dies, no one seems to care ,or laughs at it. Now I know pirates were ruthless in this time period in history, but in this movie where pirates are portrayed as noble, this did not make sense. The best part of the first two movies was the over the top Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) bringing laughs and freshness to scenes, however in At World’s End his character is just strange, making jokes that fall flat.

At World’s End could have made a potentially bad trilogy great, but instead makes it even worse. Although Pirates is a sensation right now, it seems doubtful this trilogy will be as highly regarded as the Star Wars Trilogy is now, or Lord of the Rings Trilogy will be in the future.

Final Score: 2/5

Second Opinion by Sirus

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” (Pirates 3) is what many hope to be the final chapter in the hugely successful series of movies that Disney has created. At the time of its release, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” broke weekend sales records because of the popularity of the quality cinema fans loved in the first movie. Pirates 3 has the same skilled director Gore Verbinski at the helm, once again giving audiences a wild ride that is sure to satisfy like the two movies before. In Pirates 3, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), William Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are ready to journey to the ends of the earth to save Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from his fate in Davy Jones’ Locker. Jack was swallowed by the Kraken at the end of the second movie and is now doomed to an eternity of nothingness. They need to save Jack most specifically because they are gathering the nine pirate captains to defeat The East India Trading Company, which has taken over the seas with a little help from Davy Jones’ heart.

Many of the cast from the first movie return and are joined by a huge cast of international pirates from each of the other crews. Most of the movie is spent with fewer large battles than the second movie offered, although this is forgiven because the final battle lasts for a very long time and is quite exciting. The script is as witty and clever as before, infusing most scenes with humor that will have audiences laughing, even during the battle scenes. The music in the movie is as phenomenal as it was in the first two, thanks to the masterful work of one of my favorite composers, Hans Zimmer. Many songs that fans know by now from the first two movies are back and exert a great power on the audience because they are so well recognized. New tracks manage to hold as much if not more power at the right moments as the opening scene introduces a chilling new song that keeps the movie going throughout.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” starts off with a bang and manages to keep things interesting until a finale that will have crowds cheering. The ending fits perfectly and everything falls into place nicely. Be sure to stay after the credits for a short conclusion although it lasts less than a minute. If you have seen and enjoyed the first two Pirates movies, you will have a great time at Pirates 3 as long as you are prepared to sit for three hours. I enjoyed the movie a lot and highly recommend it to those who like to laugh their way through their action adventure flicks. Pirates 3 is a lot of fun and should not be missed.
