Little Miss Sunshine is a strange movie indeed. From watching the trailers I was just confused beyond belief about what the hell the movie was supposed to be about. For those of you who watched the trailers and had the same reaction, Little Miss Sunshine is a movie about a family of misfits that goes on a road trip so they can get the youngest member, Olive, to a beauty pageant for little girls. The pageant just happens to be called Little Miss Sunshine.
At its core, Little Miss Sunshine is a family road trip movie but its so much more because the characters in the movie were all so unique and felt real. Olive’s character was the best of them all, as she shined through the negativity of everyone else with her cute naivety. Along with Olive, we have her dad, who is obsessed with his seven steps to success a sort of self help plan. Then there is her brother who took a vow of silence and hates everyone. These characters by themselves wouldn’t work, but when put together, they really click.
Little Miss Sunshine is probably the best laugh out loud comedy I’ve seen in a while. It does have quite a bit of swearing and short scenes of drug use and nudity (only the front of porno magazines). While the movie is enjoyable for adults, I wouldn’t suggest bringing your young children as there are some touch subjects the film touches on that the children might not be ready to face. That being said, any mature teens and older will have a blast as long as they are open to laugh at the totally bizarre things the characters go through in the movie. The movie is otally worth watching again and again.
