Kenna - Make Sure They See My Face
Without any weak songs, Make Sure They See My Face is one of the best albums of 2007.

In a society where music is considered great because it's popular;
exceptional alternative artists like Kenna never get the chance to become hits.
Even after much critical acclaim, Kenna's debut album, New Scared Cow, flopped. After four years of
soul-searching, and plenty of studio-time, Kenna is back with his
follow up to New Sacred Cow. Titled Make Sure They See My Face, a
foretelling of what Kenna is going to accomplish, Kenna is showing the
music industry that he deserves to be an icon.
Make Sure They See My Face (or Face) is not only more polished than
New Sacred Cow, but also contains radio-worthy songs that retain the
unique and alternative sound he is loved for.
The album opens with Daylight, an extremely moody song that
sets aside any worries that Face won't be as deep as New Sacred Cow.
Out Of Control (State of Emotion) is simply an amazing song. Danceable,
but uplifting and deep, the unique beats and soothing vocals combine
and explode into a memorable bold song. It's easily my favorite
song so far this year.
Although Out of Control and Daylight may be
powerful songs, they aren't the style that will make Kenna famous;
those honors belong to Loose Wires and Say Goodbye To
Love. The former is an effort by both Kenna and friend/producer Pharrell Williams. Plenty of unique sounds and beats make Loose Wires one of the strongest tracks on the album; it's a very upbeat song you'll be dancing to most. The first single of the album is Say Goodbye to Love, the most mainstream sounding song on the album. Mainstream isn't a disappointing turn when it comes from Kenna. Say Goodbye to Love can simply be described as perfect. I've listened to the song nearly thirty times now, and it continues to sound as fresh as ever. With simply perfect vocals from Kenna, and awesome music and drums in the background, this is the song that will make Kenna a star if nothing else does.
The next four songs on the album are uplifting and powerful in the same way New Sacred Cow is. It's hard to classify what genre Sun Red Sky Blue belongs to, but it belongs to be heard with the rest of the album. Soothing vocals and well-written lyrics makes Baptized in Blacklight a very emotional and beautiful song. Another song, that shares the same tone as Baptized in Blacklight, is Static. It's not quite as powerful, but it's the slowest and simplest song of the album.
Face the Gun reinstates the upbeat mood of the album. Better Wise Up is a very cool song that fits well in the album. It starts off slow, but keeps building pressure until it explodes with one of the best beat solos in recent history. Two slow and soft songs, Be Still and Wide Awake, bring the album to a enjoyable and well-chosen close.
Without any weak songs, Face is one of the best albums of 2007. It boasts a perfect balance of upbeat and alternative songs, the latter of which are ready for radio play. Kenna deserves, and hopefully will receive, fame and respect from this stellar album.
