Iron Man
Pefect balance between action and characters.

Review by Sirus

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a genius by all accounts as the young CEO of Stark Industries, a weapons development company. While riding back from demonstrating a new missile in a military hummer, he is captured by militants who threaten to kill him if he doesn’t build them their own version of the missile that he just test fired. Rather than build the missile, Stark creates a metal combat suit with the parts he is provided that he plans to use to escape his captivity. After escaping from his captors and making it home, he decides he doesn’t want anything more to do with weapons and instead works towards perfecting his idea of a mechanical suit. With his new found power, he takes on his own self proclaimed missions to do what he believes is right. Stark has an assistant named Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) who runs all his errands and anything else he needs. Throughout the movie they slowly form a romantic relationship. The story is nothing too unexpected but the characters are good enough to keep audiences interested till the end.

Robert Downey Jr. does a fantastic job as Tony Stark. Tony Stark constantly exudes an air of superiority and conceit while still coming across as a likable and funny guy. The movie would have been a lot less enjoyable without Robert Downey Jr. While a lot of the quality comes from his acting, a lot of it also comes from the well written script. The jokes in the movie are funny and fit the situations in which they are presented. The technology used in the movie is amazing to see in action and being built. The tools Stark has at his disposal to get his work done are so intuitive that it is easy to follow what is going on. The movie makes sure to spend time developing its characters so that what action it has is used sparingly and only as much as is needed. The few fight scenes we get to see with Iron Man are fantastic to behold. At the same time they are realistic because we see the limitations the suit has so it isn’t simply some unstoppable machine. Iron Man has a solid soundtrack of 80s rock and epic orchestra. Fans of movies that are nothing but action should see Iron Man so they can understand what it means to strike a balance between action and characters. I came to see Iron Man kick ass and blow things up but I stayed for Tony Stark.

It's really refreshing to experience a great superhero movie again. Last year we were given Spider-Man 3 that although entertained us at Marvel-Ous fully, was pretty shallow. Iron Man, however, is a very intelligent film that never lost my interest. It's a great start to this new franchise (or possible The Avengers franchise) and it is sweetened greatly by the outstanding performance by one of the greatest and most unappreciated actors around, Mr. Robert Downey Jr.
