Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
Made in the Dark is without a doubt Hot Chip's best album thus far.

I'm going to get this out of the way first: I absolutely love the blending of Indie and Electronica. It has beat and substance – and that is truly the basis I judge all music on. When Hot Chip made a major splash with their Electro-Indie album, The Warning, in 2006, it was easy to tell that they would be an Electro-Indie band to watch. For their third album, Hot Chip is back with Made in the Dark, a louder, more fun album, that ranks them in the top tier of Electronic-Indie bands alongside their mates LCD Soundsystem and their soul mates Datarock.
The first song on the album, Out at the Pictures, totally surprises when it kicks into a serious rocking beat. It's such a big change into a louder dance sound for Hot Chip, that you know this album is going to be different. After the great Out at the Pictures, Shake a Fist starts. Shake a Fist is an insane Electronica song that sounds like it should be coming out of some creepy baby of The Rapture and Benassi. About two minutes into the song, it pauses for a short voice-over. The narrator informs us that “If you have a pair of headphones, you better get them out and cranked up, because they're really going to help you.” This is good advice, considering the song totally changes pace into this crazy beat riff I've never heard anything like before. You can't help but start moving to Shake a Fist at this point. The song then unwinds to the calmer opening, but then right when you think it's over, it kicks into a different purely awesome riff from an instrument that I can't identify (but most likely is some sort of beatbox) that repeats to the end of the song. Shake a Fist is worth buying the album for alone.
After a crazy assault of beats and vocals, Hot Chip begins to start shifting into more recognizable territory. Instead of trying to combine upbeat electronica and slower moodier sounds into each other like they have before (which, don't get me wrong, sounds great too), they wrote fast songs and slower songs for the album, giving every song a unique sound. Ready for the Floor really showcases the vocal power of lead singer, Alexis Taylor, and how versatile their beats can be, in this case sounding a bit like a 1950's song remixed.
The entire album is solid all the way through. There are some great slower songs, and some faster songs that make you want to get to a dance floor. Another album highlight is Hold On, which features the deliciously funny chorus line “I'm only going to heaven, if it feels like hell. I'm only going to heaven if it tastes like caramel”. Wrestlers is a funky Hot Chip song, and even though the tune is simple, it's gratifying and satisfying to hear a great Hot Chip's spin on R&B.
Hot Chip is really a great band. It's the kind of Electro that you can listen to but not feel guilty, because of the creative beats and lyrics. Made in the Dark is without a doubt Hot Chip's best album thus far – Hot Chip is officially 3 for 3.
