Celebrating 3 years in business!
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
It is not only far superior to its predecessor but so far the best superhero movie of the year.
Review by Sirus

There have always been certain expectations in the movie business that a movie based on a comic book couldn’t be very good and the second movie in any series was always going to be the worst. Recently studios have started to put real talent and energy into making comic book movies great, resulting in massively popular movies that are widely considered good.

The first Hellboy movie was to me simply a fine diversion and a solid summer movie. Upon reviewing it in preparation for the sequel, I was reminded that, while it was a good movie, it had quite a few flaws. Hellboy 2 takes everything that made the first movie good, its characters and story, and adds in a more epic scope, more variety in enemies, and most of all, much better action scenes and special effects.

Hellboy 2 tells the story of Hellboy and his crew faced with yet another threat on the world as they know it. This time, a prince from a long forgotten kingdom seeks to gather the pieces of a mystical crown with the power to awaken the long-sleeping golden army. Throughout this epic adventure, Hellboy’s relationship with Liz is given quite a bit of emotionally powerful development. Abe returns and is given copious amounts of well deserved development as well.

The team is joined by a newcomer who is a welcome addition thanks to his witty character and interesting powers. The enemies in the movie are numerous, wondrous, and grand. Every one of the movie’s massive fight scenes is a marvelous sight to behold, causing the audience’s hearts to pound and cheering to ensue. The film’s epic finale is well worth the build up and filled with no less than two back to back clashes.

The characters in the film are largely augmented by animatronics and CG yet never lose their ability to express human emotions. While I shed many a tear during this movie, most of it came from the beauty of love accurately portrayed before my eyes. The music in the movie is similarly breathtaking thanks to Danny Elfman’s beautiful score. The music is largely orchestral with Elfman’s distinct signature present in many of the tracks. His music has always been known for creating a feeling of awe and wonder in the face of mystical beauties, making it the perfect score for the movie.

Hellboy 2 is everything fans want in a perfect summer blockbuster; filled to the brim with action, adventure, wonder, and most importantly, character and emotion. While some directors have given up animatronics in favor of CG creatures, Guillermo del Toro creates his creatures the old fashioned way, making them that much more real. If you thought the first Hellboy movie was good but lacking something, or skipped it because you didn’t think it looked all that good, do yourself a favor and watch Hellboy 2 and you will not be disappointed. It is not only far superior to its predecessor but so far the best superhero movie of the year.

Second Opinion

Not only did Hellboy II top the first one, but it also happens to be the best superhero movie so far in 2008.
