Hancock
I don’t see why it was given such a massive amount of hype.

John Hancock (Will Smith) is part superhero, part drunken bum, and part ass hole but most of all completely reckless. He seems completely unable to save the day without leaving massive amounts of damage in his wake both to civilian’s cars and buildings. One day he saves a PR man named Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) and to thank him, Ray offers to give Hancock advice on how he can make the public like him. During his time learning from Ray, it is announced on the news that the DA of Los Angeles has a warrant out for Hancock’s arrest. Ray decides that it is the perfect opportunity to have Hancock serve his time in prison until the city finally realizes how badly they miss him. The character of Hancock has an interesting back-story that is developed quite well over the course of the movie. I truly grew to love and care for Hancock as well as cheering for his exploits.
I am a huge fan of Will Smith and I think he got another perfect role with Hancock. Will Smith gets the attitude of Hancock down perfectly, such that he almost seems like a different person. Jason Bateman is also good in his role, although I found myself chuckling at some of the things he says sincerely wondering how anyone could really mean them. The music in the movie is composed by John Powell and his compositions are fantastic. They capture the emotions of each scene perfectly and are a treat to listen to during the film. The music that isn’t composed by John Powell is not so good with a few subpar hip hop songs and other things that didn’t really seem to fit. Hancock is at its core a superhero movie infused with a decent amount of humor. The humor is largely isolated in the beginning of the movie when Hancock is unrestrained. The ending of the movie is solid and emotionally charged, wrapping up nicely. Hancock is a good movie that I enjoyed but I don’t see why it was given such a massive amount of hype leading up to its release. It falls short of better superhero movies such as Iron Man and The Hulk.
