Brings up questions that many of us should answer.

Gone Baby Gone is a complex movie that on its face is about a simple kidnapping of a little girl. If this was just your average abduction, it would likely have a hard time drawing an audience and there is certainly a lot more here than meets the eye. Based on a novel by the same author who brought us Mystic River, the story brings in the complexities of the human condition through the many characters. For Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) the kidnapping of Amanda McCready is just another horrible story on the news that he wishes would pass with the happiest of endings. Next thing he knows, one of the girl’s family members comes knocking on his door asking for his help in finding little Amanda. Patrick is a private investigator who works with his girlfriend and takes the cases he gets seriously. He gets caught up in a string of events that show him that there is more to the case than there initially seems.
Casey Affleck gives a great performance as his character confronts various emotions. He gives off a badass vibe when he confronts suspects because he never flinches. The movie’s script has its good moments and its bad. Some of the less interesting parts of the script are filled to the brim with curses and, while they don’t exactly offend me, it feels like those parts would have been better if cleaned up a little. Gone Baby Gone is a deeply emotionally disturbing experience that points out the moral ambiguity that exists through everyday experiences of everyone, including police. Many of the characters are faced with difficult choices throughout the story and they react to them in a way they believe to be right. As much as we love to believe in the universality of the morals we believe in, the movie gives us a hope that at least those around us will act in a way they believe to be right even if it contradicts our beliefs. The movie is fairly light on action and very heavy on obsession. Patrick and his girlfriend are deeply disturbed by the events that they witness, as they should be, and it begs the question, why aren’t we similarly deeply disturbed? If you want a morally ambiguous drama, Gone Baby Gone is well done and brings up questions that many of us should answer.
