Funny Games
Funny Games is easily the worst movie I have seen in theaters yet this year and anything but fun.
Review by Sirus

A family goes to their vacation home for a week or two to relax, unwind, and play some golf with friends. Nearby, they run into by some unexpected young guests of their boy’s uncle. These guests are a pair of boys around age 20 who have a sick sense of humor and never know when to shut up. They trick their way into the family’s house and play one stupid game after another until they decide to bet the family that they won’t make it through the night. It may sound like I am holding back some important detail about the plot but that’s pretty much the gist of it.

Naomi Watts plays the mother of the tortured family and she certainly appears to be tortured in the movie. Still, I wouldn’t have to be a very good actor to be tortured by these idiots droning on and on. There is very little music in the movie besides some opera at the beginning and some trashy pseudo-metal that grates on your nerves more than the dialogue. The movie boils down to a bunch of moronic dialogue that makes Resevoir Dogs sound smart interspersed with a little brutal torture. The most disturbing thing of all is that I was interested in going to see the movie in the first place. If you are at all considering seeing this movie, be prepared for disappointment if you still insist on going. The movie is totally forgettable and in this case that is a good thing because Funny Games is easily the worst movie I have seen in theaters yet this year and anything but fun.

Funny Games is easily the hardest movie to critique that I've watched since I began reviewing. If the movie is taken as a straight horror movie, it's well, odd. But, it's not supposed to be another slasher movie. It's a critique of the "torture porn" genre. The movie, while tense, is not scary at all. Nearly no violence take place on screen. It takes a movie that is full of gore and rape, then removes the actual acts and replaces it with the feelings of what its like for these acts to happen. The movie and director feel that someone that takes joy in a "torture porn" movie, actually likes to witness these horrible acts, because after all a movie is still real. The film really does make you think how horrible violence and murder can be, and will make some question if films like Hostel are meant to simply excite (even sexually) people that watch them. It's a very hard film to rate, and ironically the people that hate this film are people who wanted there to be more gore and nudity. The movie is captivating and has a message at its core, but one that not everyone will understand or agree with. See Funny Games if you've ever seen a gory horror movie, and honestly judge for yourself.
