A young woman runs through the forest with men chasing after her. She holds in her arms a large blue stone that she has just stolen from the king. As the men get closer to her, she casts a spell on the stone sending it out of their grasp. The men curse her and carry her away to their castle where they hope to extract some information from her. At the same time, a young boy, Eragon, is out hunting in the woods. Just as he is about to loose his arrow at a still deer, he sees a flash of light. When he is able to see again, he notices a blue stone smoking in a crater in front of him. The stone has found its master. Eragon being a simple farm boy takes the stone home with him where he keeps it hidden from his uncle until it hatches. When the stone begins to crack, Eragon realizes that it is no stone but instead an egg. Eragon finds out that he has been chosen by the dragon as its rider and goes on a quest to save an elf princess and defeat the king.
Eragon is a fun fantasy movie that has some beautifully rendered dragons. When the dragon first hatches, it is super cute the way it moves around. Eragon makes a great first fantasy movie to get kids into epic movies. Kids who like Harry Potter will have a blast here. Many adult fantasy fans who enjoyed the recent Narnia and Harry Potter movies will have fun although they should not expect anything groundbreaking. Eragon has a great orchestral score done by Patric Doyle that is heard throughout and really sets the mood. Eragon is recommended for fans of fantasy who don’t look at stories for what they do similar to other movies but the little things that set them apart. Everyone makes a big deal about how the movie is so similar to Star wars but that’s only in a very large over-generalized way. Eragon is worth the ticket price although it might not be remembered a few years down the road.
Final Score: 4/5 stars
