“Déjà Vu” begins with a party. There is a ferry in the port that is about to set off into the bay for the duration of the party. A large group of marines and their families are slowly boarding the boat. Kids are playing with their parents and everyone seems happy. A little girl drops her bear into the bay and cries as it falls into the water. A navy brass band is playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” and all the while everyone is celebrating and having a good time. Meanwhile, down on the deck, a security guard notices a radio playing in an SUV with a Beach Boys song. After he examines it for a while, the man realizes there is a bomb in the back seat of the car but before he can do anything, the bomb explodes and the entire ship explodes with it.
After the explosion, ATF agent Doug Carlin, played by Denzel Washington, shows up to investigate. During his investigation, Doug is approached by a man from the FBI who wants him to join a special task force to figure out what happened on the ferry. As a part of the team, they use a special machine to look four and a half days into the past to see what happened on that day. They set into motion things to change the past and eventually the future.
“Déjà Vu” is a fast moving thriller with a hint of Sci-Fi that gives the viewers something to think about when it comes to reality. The movie is infused with some very emotional overtones at some points as Doug really gets into the investigation. Denzel Washington plays another great role and is totally believable, as always. The movie was gripping from beginning to end. It does a great job of working with time travel without falling into many of the traps that movies with time travel tend to encounter. In the end, the scenario is believable and the movie leaves you satisfied. Viewers who like crime dramas with a hint of Sci-Fi will enjoy “Déjà Vu” as a great intellectual thriller.
Final Score: 4.2/5 stars
