Death Race is a remake of an already cheesy movie and somehow just about as good but for slightly different reasons. In a near future, the prisons have become so overpopulated that private corporations have taken to operating the entire nation’s prison system. While this may sound like a far fetched fantasy idea to some, the overpopulation of the prisons is already quite a large problem. Curiously the overcrowded prisons don’t appear to be all that crowded in the numerous scenes shot within the prison walls. To continue to make profit like a good corporate entity does, the companies that own the prisons run a “death race”. The race itself is broadcast live and uncut over the internet for anyone to see, provided they pay the hefty subscription fee. Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is a man working hard to support his wife and young daughter until his wife is killed and he is blamed for it. Jensen soon finds out that the reason he is in prison is to race in place of famed driver Frankenstein who was knocked out of the running at the end of the last race. Jensen must win this one last race to win his freedom and get the corporation a large amount of money in the form of increased ratings in the process.
Jason Statham is as awesome as usual in his stoic action role. Fans of Statham will find a lot to love in his performance. Joan Allen plays the prison’s warden and gives her character quite the attitude of badass unstoppable power hungry woman. The soundtrack is done by Paul Haslinger and gives the movie a powerful drive thanks to great industrial tracks. The music tends to get overpowered by the thunderous sound effects of guns shooting and cars crashing but what you hear is great. There are a number of songs used in the movie although sadly they are all hip hop tracks. While I assume the hip hop was included to fit with the prison setting, I was hoping to hear some 80s metal during action scenes especially after seeing the trailer. The movie sells itself as high octane action from beginning to end. The movie has a few moments of excitement spaced well throughout that will have audiences cheering. I was disappointed by the lack of gore shown especially after the amount of gore in the original. Much of this is because the race is now on a closed track so there is no more wanton running over of civilians along the way. If you don’t mind dumb entertainment, there is some fun to be had in Death Race.
