Celebrating 3 years in business!
Cobra Starship - ˇViva La Cobra!
Although this album is much more polished than their first, it is still far too unfocused.

Cobra Starship is just like a new bike; assembly is required. The band was first formed for the sole purpose of creating the instantly popular song, Snakes on a Plane (Bring It). Quickly after the song's success, a band with the same name, but different members (besides lead-singer Gabe), was thrown together to cash-in on the popularity of the song. Their first album was catchy, although uninspired. Too many songs were written to fluff the album. Now, Cobra Starship has finally had a chance to get into the studio and spend time creating an album. However, ˇViva La Cobra! is just like my pile of half-built bikes; while showing effort and talent, the work is far too inconsistent.
Although sounding more original on this effort, and having quite a few gems, too often does Cobra Starship change their sound. What's ironic is that they're at their best when sounding like Midtown, the band Gabe left to be in Cobra Starship. This is especially evident on The City Is at War. The song focuses on guitars and Gabe's vocals rather than trying to sound like Hip-Hop or another band altogether. At one point in The City Is at War, the lyrics are “bang, bang shoot 'em up, shoot 'em up, yeah”. Lyrics like this show that Cobra Starship can be pure rock while still remaining catchy and effective. Guilty Pleasure, the single of the album, is another great rock song that makes Cobra Starship again seem like a serious Rock band. But sadly, after the third track, Robots Will Cry, the album goes all over the place.
Kiss My Sass is a decent Hip-Hop song. Something seem odd about that? Well, It's a hip hop song, which doesn't seem right considering they are a Rock band. It's not a bad song, but it's just sad that they still have to reduce themselves to producing songs for the sole purpose of selling albums to every crowd of people. It honestly just feels like something from Gym Class Heroes instead of something from Cobra Starship. Damn You Look Good and I'm Drunk (Scandalous) is awesome. The song is insanely catchy and funny, inspiring you to jump up and begin singing and dancing. This is a song that was made to be a hit on the radio, and for once, it at least deserves to be.
Smile for the Paparazzi is one of the best tracks on the album, mixing Latin music and Rock. The Latin-sounding parts of the song are nothing special, but the Rock parts are simply great. This is how Cobra Starship should sound. The majority of it, minus the Latin sounding parts, perfectly blends together Rock and a little bit of Dance and Hip-Hop, into a solid and and simply awesome song. In one part of the song, you are tricked to think the it's returning to the chorus, when it instead explodes into a guitar solo that leads into a great beatbox-enhanced version of the chorus.
Although ˇViva La Cobra! is much more polished than their first album, it is still far too unfocused. There are some great tracks on here, but far too many generic songs--most of which result from trying to sound like a Hip-Hop band. Cobra Starship is a talented Rock band, good enough on their own merit that they don't need to imitate other sounds. Hopefully by the time their third album rolls around, the band will decide if they want to be a very enjoyable rock band or an unoriginal Gym Class Heroes/Fall Out Boy hybrid.
