Games
Best RPG
Leonhart:
Winner: Mass Effect
BioWare really outdid themselves. Taking
virtually every awesome thing from their past
RPG franchises and mixing them into a new
product (plus an additional pinch of greatness),
BioWare unleashed Mass Effect, their newest and
possibly greatest open-world RPG. Or, I guess I
should say open-universe RPG, since you aren't
really limited to any one world.
Runner Up: Folklore
Sirus:
Winner: Persona 3
Persona 3 is the longest RPG I have ever played and easily the best of the year.
Runner Up: Blue Dragon

Best Action/Adventure
Game
Leonhart:
Winner: Super Mario Galaxy
Those of you who were angered or saddened
by Super Mario Sunshine’s lack of a “Mario feeling” will
be happy that Super Mario Galaxy has returned to what
made the series so awesome. Fantastic control, great
platforming design, a clever gravity element, and lush,
colorful environments make Super Mario Galaxy the best
3D Mario game to date.
Runner Up: Assassin’s Creed
Sirus:
Winner: God of War II
God of War 2 does everything right and improves on its predecessor in every way. The variety of gameplay presented through multiple weapons and gameplay modes gives it a lasting value rarely seen in the action game genre.
Runner Up: Odin Sphere
Dack:
Winner: Super Mario Galaxy
Runner Up: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Overall:
Winner: Super Mario Galaxy
Runner Up: God of War II
Best Rhythm
Game
Leonhart:
Winner: Rock Band
Harmonix hit gold with Guitar Hero, but
then a little company known as MTV decided they’d buy
Harmonix. “Oh noes!” screamed Guitar Hero fans… but then
something amazing happened. Harmonix developed Rock
Band, which is basically Guitar Hero with ten-thousand
times the awesomeness. No longer are you limited to a
guitar, because you can also play bass and drums! Or, if
you happen to draw the short straw, you can sing as
well.
Runner Up: Guitar Hero III

Best Shooter
Leonhart:
Winner: Metroid Prime 3:
Corruption
A shooter isn’t much of a shooter unless
the controls are responsive, smooth, and gratifying to
utilize. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption accomplishes that
and much more, delivering a beautiful conclusion to an
already outstanding game series.
Runner Up: Bioshock
Dack:
Winner: BioShock
Earning a perfect 10/10 in my review earlier this year, BioShock was one of the most beautiful and stunning games of the year. Great shooting, horror, soundtrack and story added up to make one breathtaking game.
Runner Up: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Overall:
Winner: BioShock
Runner Up: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Best Strategy
Game
Overall by Leonhart:
Winner: World in Conflict
World in Conflict received a lot of hype
before its release; GameStop.com even themed its site
based on the game on its release day. All the hype was
for good reason, too. World in Conflict is stunningly
awesome. It’s set in an alternate reality where the Cold
War never concluded and all-out war breaks out; and by
all-out war, I mean nukes. The effects in World in
Conflict - especially those of a nuke explosion - are
spectacular, and just add the cream to the already great
crop.
Runner Up: Supreme Commander
Best Puzzle
Game
Leonhart:
Winner: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the
Warlords
Whoever decided that Bejeweled needed a
better story and role-playing elements is a genius.
Quite possibly one of the worst ideas on paper proved to
be one of the best ideas in gaming. Very strategic and
occasionally quite challenging, Puzzle Quest: Challenge
of the Warlords demonstrated that even simple casual
puzzle games can be hardcore.
