August Rush
It lets out the floodgates of emotion with such force that you might just lose your footing.
Review by Sirus

One element to a great movie that I always look for is a great soundtrack. Sure some movies can be great without one but movies with great soundtracks are able to shine brighter than the rest. August Rush is one of those movies that wouldn’t be the same without its soundtrack and it shows marvelously every time one of its wonderful songs plays. The movie is a story about Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyer) who fall in love and, in the course of one passionate night, create a child. In a freak accident, Lyla ends up in the hospital with her baby. Through the forceful decision of her father, Lyla’s child is put up for adoption and she is told that the child died. Both Lyla and Louis go about their lives as best they can, confused by the feelings they have for each other that only grow stronger in their separation.

Alone and in a home for boys, Lyla’s son 11-year-old August Rush (Freddie Highmore) has been counting the days since his arrival while hoping constantly that he will reunite with his parents one day. August meets a new child services representative one day and his talk with that man sparks his hope and gives him the strength to run away from the home to search for his parents. August finds himself on the streets of New York City where he meets multiple influential characters who show him the direction he should go with his life. It all moves along at a perfect pace thanks to the fabulous soundtrack so that there is never a boring moment. The sense of anticipation for the finale is constant and it all leads up to the most breathtakingly touching ending that affected me more deeply than any ending to any movie before it. Not since falling in love have I felt such a surge of unexplainable emotions through my body.

A movie about love as deep as this wouldn’t be very effective without fantastic acting. Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Freddie Highmore all give wonderfully genuine performances. Freddie Highmore especially makes the role his and the joy in his face is contagious. August Rush is the perfect combination of love and music, even more so than Music and Lyrics. The characters’ deep passions for music come across and take hold of your being, compelling you to watch these characters find their way. The music in the movie is amazingly diverse with a natural fusion of rock and classical. The improvised guitar August plays multiple times through the movie is a wonder for the senses.

I have seen many movies this year of various genres, but August Rush more than anything has shined through as a masterpiece. You should find someone you love in your life and share this movie with them and then tell them how much you love them. I haven’t been touched to tears like I was in the movie in a very long time. It lets out the floodgates of emotion with such force that you might just lose your footing. There couldn’t be a better holiday movie than August Rush. There is no excuse for anyone to miss this one.
